Acoustics – Church Designer’s Magazine

by Brian Atkinson on July 1, 2015

Acoustics By Design President, Kenric Van Wyk, is interviewed in the May/June 2015 issue of Church Designer’s Magazine.Acoustics for Church Designer's MagazineThe Article, “A Sound Policy,” by Keith Loria, describes the need to prepare the worship space acoustically, and what to factor into the plan for a worship environment.

The worship music style is an important factor in determining the acoustical nature of a sanctuary. A lively space is more appropriate for traditional worship; enhancing the choir, congregational singing, and organ. Contemporary praise band styles require a more absorptive space to handle the higher sound levels. Combining these factors with the room’s volume and finishes determine the acoustical character of the sanctuary.

Working from the outside of the building inward on noise control is equally important. Taking environmental noise from roads, airport flight-paths, and other nearby noise sources into account is just as important as the placement and type of mechanical units.
“We recommend that the mechanical units be in their own room with enough ductwork to isolate the noise levels,” Van Wyk says.

Acoustics By Design also includes an integrated team of audio-visual consultants who design audio, video, theatrical lighting, and technical systems, and integrate them with the acoustical environment. Choosing an independent acoustical consultant, like Acoustics By Design, for your church sanctuary project is an important step in creating an exceptional space for ministry.
